According to the American Dental Association, approximately 37% of the population suffer from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Symptoms of TMD include: headaches, neck/back pain, earaches, pain behind the eyes, popping noises upon opening the mouth, all of which can seriously diminish the quality of our everyday life. Most people associate these symptoms with stress, not realizing that it can be related to the incorrect position of their lower jaw.
In order to make the diagnosis, our office uses modern technology – Joint Vibration Analysis (JVA) to assess the health of the joints. Treatment of the disorder begins with a mandibular repositioning splint which allows us to establish the correct position of the lower jaw. For some patients, the splint is all that is required. Others may need additional treatment with orthodontics, restorative or prosthetic work.
